Dole Red Bananas

About Red Bananas

  • Found in specialty stores and also known as Jamaican bananas
  • Smaller than the common banana, with a deep red or purple skin
  • Flavor of the creamy white-pink flesh has a hint of raspberry
  • A favorite in Central America where it is grown

Selecting

Look for a deep purple color if you want a ripe red banana.
A lighter-colored skin indicates that it is not yet ripe. Avoid bruises and cracks in the peel.

Storing

Like any type of banana, this fruit will ripen at room temperature in a couple of days. Turn it occasionally and do not cover.

Eating

Red bananas are delicious when eaten fresh out of the hand or chopped up and added to desserts and salads. They are also ideal for baking and frying.
